Drivable Grass

Drivable Grass is the latest eco-friendly product manufactured by Soil Retention, a company specializing in Plantable concrete systems.

Introduced to the market less than 18 months ago, Drivable Grass consists of concrete muffins that are connected by a grid system. The tile-like, 2-foot-by-2-foot squares “flex” and conform to uneven ground surfaces without separating. Even when saturated, Drivable Grass maintains the characteristics of a drivable, grassy surface while minimizing wheel rutting and water runoff.

Because of its unique lattice-style structure, one can plant vegetation, such as grass, right through it, while providing a solid surface comparable to more common paving materials, such as asphalt and concrete. Its easy-to-install directions make it extremely consumer-friendly.

“We believe it’s up to all of us to help keep our neighborhoods healthy and clean,” said Engineer Jan Jansson, company founder and president. “The permeable structure of Drivable Grass enables precipitation to infiltrate the underlying soils, thus increasing on-site storm water storage and minimizing runoff. Vehicle oils would normally run down a typical concrete driveway and go right into our storm drains and ultimately into our oceans, lakes and rivers. Drivable Grass is helping to solve one of the biggest environmental problems facing our country today.”

Alternatives to using grass in the grid system include sand, gravel, ground cover, artificial grass and sod in low-use areas. The product can also be used in other applications such as golf cart paths, residential driveways, pet digging control, outdoor showers, RV parking, boat ramps and many more. It also contributes points toward LEED certification.

Commercial applications are common as well. Examples include: parking lots, fire access lanes, service vehicle utility roads, emergency vehicle access drives, bio-swales, truck maintenance and equipment yards are just a few of the ways Drivable Grass can be installed.

Drivable Grass is sold across the nation through a growing network of dealers and distributors.   The product retails for roughly $2.50 to $3.00 per square foot. For more information visit www.soilretention.com, or call 800-346-7995.
