Irrigation Foundation hosts 2014 Irrigation Faculty Academy

The Irrigation Foundation hosted its 12th annual Irrigation Faculty Academy in Kennett Square, Pa., on June 19 – 20. Twenty-two college and high school instructors from 21 schools attended the event, with nine first-time attendees. The program was held at Longwood Gardens, a botanical garden with over 1,000 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows.

During the two-day event, industry experts led sessions on:

Design capacity
Hydraulics
Backflow prevention
How various systems work together

Attendees also toured the irrigation systems at both Longwood Gardens and Nemours Mansion & Gardens, a 300-acre estate located in Wilmington, Del.

Faculty Academy regularly receives rave reviews, and this year was no different. Nearly all attendees said they would attend again and that the topics covered were relevant to the classes they teach.

“Rubbing elbows with other professors teaching irrigation and learning state-of-the-art technology from industry professionals makes Irrigation Faculty Academy an outstanding professional development opportunity,” said Douglas Linde, PhD, professor of turf management at Delaware Valley College.

Faculty Academy helps ensure that the next generation of irrigators receives quality instruction with vetted materials. Attendees also provide the Foundation with valuable insight on student recruitment opportunities and challenges. Donor dollars make the event possible and underwrote nearly $10,000 in travel assistance to instructors who otherwise would not have been able to attend.

The 2014 event was sponsored by Hunter Industries, Inc. (San Marcos, Calif.), Longwood Gardens (Kennett Square, Pa.), Nelson Irrigation Corp. (Walla Walla, Wash.) and ValleyCrest Landscape Maintenance (Calabasas, Calif.).
