Pearl’s Premium ultra low maintenance lawn seed

Pearl’s Premium ultra low maintenance lawn seed is transforming the lawns of homes, office and commercial buildings, public parks, golf courses, airports, college campuses, cemeteries, and roadways.  More than 5,000 Pearl’s Premium lawns have been planted in the United States.

The low maintenance grass seed grows at one quarter the rate of blue grass and requires only monthly mowing on average, needing only one quarter of the labor.  It grows 12” roots, does not require chemical fertilizer, rarely needs water after it is established, and looks like a lush green lawn — even during winter.

“Landscapers do NOT make money mowing lawns,” said Andrew Blank, owner of Lawn Angels of Wayland, MA, who has installed Pearl’s Premium grass seed at commercial properties for years.

“With lawn mowers costing $12,000-$14,000 and having only a five-year life span, plus the cost of fuel, maintenance and labor, many landscapers can only use lawn maintenance as a loss leader,” Blank said.  “The only way lawn maintenance companies make money in this business is with spring cleanups, fall cleanups, pruning/hedging and snow plowing.  There’s a limit to how many customers a company can mow in a single week.”

If landscapers offer homeowners an annual fixed contract, in contrast to a weekly billed contract, mowing every three weeks to once per month at the most, Blank said that they can now quadruple their customer base by staggering the mowing schedule and getting four times the income, while limiting their loss leader to 75% less cost per customer.  Lawn mowers then last 20 years with the same number of customers, or provide 75% more return with four times the customers.  In this way, by installing Pearl’s Premium lawns, landscapers can make far more money by doing much less work.  Who wouldn’t want that kind of ROI [return on investment]?

David Gordon, owner of Newton Organic Lawn, Newton, MA, who has installed many residential Pearl’s Premium lawns, agreed.

“The lawn stays green throughout the season, requiring mowing every three-four weeks in the spring and fall and every four-five weeks in the summer rather than every week,” Gordon said.  “The customer likes the greener lawn and the reduced need for watering.  I have more time for other customer needs like mulching, pruning, and spring and fall cleanups.  And I have more happy customers who love their organic lawns.”

“Pearl’s Premium is an environmental and economic game changer,” said Jackson Madnick, founder and CEO of Pearl’s Premium.  He spent eight years researching and developing the grass seed.  “Numerous scientific studies have linked lawn care chemicals with health risks, and lawn irrigation is a major drain on drinking water supplies in the U.S.

“I developed Pearl’s Premium to help make American lawns environmentally sustainable.  In the process, we found out that we could also save property owners a lot of time and money by nearly eliminating the maintenance,” Madnick said.

Madnick said that another profit-making model has evolved from innovative landscapers.  About 90% of lawn care in Massachusetts is “Do It Yourselfers” (DYI).  Some landscapers have made inroads with them by marketing the fact that Pearl’s Premium saves them money, is healthier for pets and children, and far less mowing.  Then the landscaper gets the business of installing a new Pearl’s lawn over the old high maintenance lawn and mows it once a month.  Many of the DYI customers will pay to have their lawns cut once a month, but not every week.  Thus, the landscaper is expanding the customer market.

Americans spend many billions annually and use between 30% and 60% of the summer drinking water supply on residential and commercial lawns, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  Water shortages from your neighbor’s lawn care lead to increased water prices for everyone, water bans, and enforced conservation.  Pearl’s Premium needs little to no water in the northern states after it is established and needs two-thirds less supplemental water in the South.  Cutting and water varies with climate, soils and rainfall.

Madnick explained that his patent-pending blends are composed of special premium seeds, in very specific proportions to create these benefits.  With 40 million acres of lawn, grass is America’s largest crop, covering three times more acres than corn.

Pearl’s Premium Ultra Low Maintenance lawn seed has been recognized by many as a breakthrough. The grass seed won the international “MassChallenge” competition for innovation last fall, as one of the 16 finalists, out of 446 worldwide entries.

The company is working with LEED rater Mark Price, of Price Sustainability Inc, on a ‘LEED for Homes’ project.  He is currently applying for a CIR credit for Pearl’s Premium grass seed to be considered and create a new category for non-conventional turf for LEED credit.
Pearl’s Premium substantially reduces our carbon footprint by reducing mowing by 75%.  Running a typical lawn mower for an hour is 43 times more polluting than running a modern car for an hour, because lawn mowers have no catalytic converters and other pollution controls, according to the EPA.  In addition, producing commercial fertilizers from petroleum is energy intensive and expensive.
Lawn care chemicals also get carried into homes on shoes, paws, and air currents, lingering on carpets, dust, toys and in the air we breathe.  While the lawn chemicals normally break down outside over time with UV radiation from sunlight, they persist indoors for months and are responsible for increased risk in adults for asthma, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer.  Pearl’s Premium Lawn seed, needing only one quarter the nutrition of other types of grass, can thrive and stay green year-round with a lesser amount of organic fertilizer, rather than Chemical fertilizers.  Many have predicted that the chemical fertilizers companies over time will probably switch over to organic fertilizer and products to still make a good profit and go with the times.
